Reusable Produce Bags
Say "NO" to Plastic Bags
Thousands upon thousands of disposable plastic bags are used and thrown away into landfill every day in Australia and across the world. These bags can take up to 1000 years to break down and often make their way to our waterways where they can become lethal to birds and marine wildlife who ingest them thinking that they are food. Even when plastic bags do decompose their complex chemical structure is still present in the oceans, waterways and soil as a chemical cocktail of smaller but still potent particles.
You might be already using reusable large shopping bags or are able to buy them at checkouts, but what about little plastic bags for loose produce? Most people still use small plastic bags provided in supermarkets for loose items like fruit, vegetables, bulk nuts, dried fruit, grains etc.
Some of them are biodegradable, but most of them still do not break down completely but split into tiny particles. Also, they are often far less durable even than conventional plastic bags. Paper bags are a better choice, but while they are biodegradable and recyclable, paper production itself consumes a lot of resources, and paper bags can hardly be used more than once!
In early 2012 we began designing a bag that could replace the disposable poly-bags we use when buying fruit and vegetables. We estimated that at the time we were using up to 10 of these bags per week for a family of four, over an average of 2 shopping trips. We always tried to reuse the bags at least once but ultimately it is a disposable product and is not meant to last.So we researched extensively in the development phase keeping in mind it had to be the best possible solution to the problem of disposable bags AND had to be very affordable to really make a difference.
Reusable Produce Bags from Jillby Eco Store are the perfect environmentally friendly solution when shopping for fruit and vegetables. Use them in place of the plastic bags provided at the supermarket or greengrocer. Also, with a handy long drawstring you can put them directly over your shoulder, and easily carry several of them at the same time. And they can have many more uses besides grocery shopping.
Many places in Australia have banned plastic shopping bags being used in supermarkets including the entire state South Australia and Coles Bay in Tasmania and the biggest credit needs to go to the retailers who simply dont offer plastic shopping bags anymore. Consumers soon remembered to bring their reusable bags and the environment has been the big winner. It is such a pity that the other states have not been able to enforce these measures.
Reusable Produce Bags from Jillby Eco are lightweight, washable, durable, breathable and can be used over and over, saving the use of thousands of disposable plastic bags.
They have many other uses, such as:
- Fridge Bags - we started putting my fruit and veg into the crisper section of the fridge still inside Reusable Produce Bag and found it had amazing results. The mesh fabric of the bag allows the produce to breathe naturally so it doesn't sweat and many things seem to last longer than in plastic bags. Best for broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, pumpkin, apples, mandarins, carrots, beans, and the list goes on. The bag can also be moistened before being put into the fridge for produce that like to be kept at a higher humidity like snow peas. Remember to wash your reusable Produce Bags regularly.
- Laundry Bags - Dedicate one of your Reusable Produce Bags to be a laundry wash bag. It is actually a better design than many wash bags as there is no zip to catch on delicate items. Best for small items (socks, underwear, wash cloths, washable nappy liners etc). Tie a slip knot in the drawstring and machine wash as usual.
- Storage Bags - Great for the toy/games cupboard. Store Lego sets, puzzles, anything with small pieces, and because you can see through the mesh fabric, you can quickly see what is inside the bag.
They can even hold Christmas presents!
